| Within the universe there is vast number of planets, ranging from molten rocks huddled close to their parent star, to cold desolate worlds on the outskirts of a planetary system. However, despite every world being unique, there are several characteristics that enable us to classify a world into a certain group. Herein is the Planetary Classification System as compiled by Cambridge University, Sol, as of the year 2760, Earth Standard. This is the latest version, and incorporates several newly added statistics. Please note that each planet class describes basic characteristics and ranges, and individual planets will fall anywhere within the range specified for its class. | TERRESTRIAL PLANETS These are rocky planets ranging from 1,000 to 18,000 km in diameter. There are currently eighteen classifications of terrestrial planets.
GeoMorteus Diameter: 1,000-10,000 km. Description: Small terrestrial worlds, usually found within the inner system (hot) zone. These worlds tend to have very little native geothermal energy, and are usually heated by their parent star. They also have tenuous atmospheres at best. Life Forms: None. Known Sapient Species: None known. Human Habitation: Supported habitation only. Examples: Mercury (Sol I); Diadora II.
GeoThermic Diameter: 1,000-10,000 km. Description: Small terrestrial worlds that tend to have very active tectonics, generating their own heat. They also have tenuous atmospheres at best. Life Forms: None. Known Sapient Species: None known. Human Habitation: Supported habitation only. Examples: Kelva III; Morokai IV; Qia'ta III.
GeoPassive Diameter: 1,000-10,000 km. Description: Small terrestrial worlds with minimal or no atmosphere, and little geological activity. These planets can be found throughout a solar system's habitable and outer zones. This is a general classification, and exact specifics may vary widely.
